From 27 November 2014 to the 7 February 2015, Yards of Image in Milan hosts the first Italian solo show of Servet Koçyiğit (Kaman, 1971), one of the most interesting authors of the Turkish contemporary scene.
Clean yes Silvia Cirelli, the exhibition, by title Truth Serum, presents a selection of works including photographs, installations and videos, never exhibited in Italy, able to interpret his most recent artistic career, accentuating its sarcastic and provocative imprint.

Servet Koçyiğit's current expressive research captures the intimate mapping of a country, Turkey, which for several decades has lived in constant balance between West and East, between secular and Islamic state, in the incessant dispute between the desire for modernization and the preservation of tradition.
This dialectic is explored with great originality, translating the ambivalences of one's own nation and above all by shifting attention to a more collective dimension, which cleverly evokes the unreliability of truth and its deceptive alteration.
These stylistic traits have certainly been influenced by his personal experience; we must not forget, in fact, that his generation grew up after the coup 1980, when the increasingly rigid censorship forced people to believe in an undisputed and above all imposed truth.
The precariousness of the truth, as well as its confrontation with the concept of freedom, they play a preponderant role in his poetic synthesis. "It was precisely through art" was able to affirm Koçyiğit himself "that I understood what freedom really was".

Servet Kocyigit, Truth (tree)

The Milanese exhibition opens with the serie Truth the 2011, three large-format photographs in which the artist plays on power theme, of fame and the deceptive transience of things. A group of seasoned journalists and cameramen seem to be spying relentlessly on an indefinite famous person, of which you do not see and know nothing and of which even the existence is unknown. It is the almost ferocious ambiguity of the frenzy of a scandal that becomes more important than the news itself.
It then continues with Doc (2008), a shot taken on the banks of the Tigris, focused on the value of water in some oriental cultures and on its social and religious connotations, resumed here with a sarcastic connotation.

Servet Kocyigit, Mountain Zebra

In addition to the photographs Night Shift the 2012 and Mountain Zebra the 2008, the exhibition presents Sometimes (2005), an installation entirely hand-sewn that carries the phrase "Sometimes I check the refrigerator ten times to see if it's really closed”. The work is dictated by an ironic underlying paradox: if on the one hand the compulsive act of checking the refrigerator is compared to the methodical embroidery of the letters - made in long months of work -, on the other hand, the banality of the message almost wants to diminish the very value of the work by reducing it to a simple decoration.
The path closes, finally, with the unpublished 99 years and Orbit (2014), a video and an installation presented in Milan in absolute exclusivity. In this case, Servet Koçyiğit moves towards a reflection of a mythological nature, investigating the mystery of the creation of the world, on the suspended dimension of time and above all on the interpretation of the man-woman dualism and their respective relational balances.
