Cut Away

Catalog created for the CUT AWAY exhibition, collective of the artists Safaa Erruas, Fix Gqunta, Bronwyn Katz edited by Silvia Cirelli, Yards of Image, Milan, 25 October – 22 December 2018.

No object can exist in our life without attaching itself to our body, to our emotions, to knowing ourselves.
It is from this consideration that we started to create the collective CUT AWAY, a project that presents the poetics of three central figures in the current African artistic panorama - the Moroccan Safaa erruas, and the two South Africans Fix Gqunta and Bronwyn Katz – and which reworks themes linked to place and belonging through the latent capacity of objects to translate emotional worlds.
Rather than showing off the physical presence of the body, female artists tend to present household objects – needles, glasses, mattresses, bed nets – whose relationship with human beings is implicit rather than manifest. Even without human presence, However, a presence is always felt, hovers obsessively, giving off an aura of disturbance, because not even the simplest object seems to be completely innocent.
