George Bormida

George Bormida (Ledge, 1969) he is a visual artist whose research focuses on photography as a space for poetic and perceptive reflection. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts “G.B. Cignaroli” of Verona, where he graduated in Set Design in 1994, he embarked on a professional path that led him to work as a set designer at the Carlo Felice Theater in Genoa. The theatrical experience - made up of the construction of environments, luci, expectations and atmospheres — will profoundly impact his visual language, oriented not towards recording reality, but to the creation of images as interior places.

Photography becomes for Bormida an expressive means capable of going beyond the document and transforming into a mental image. His works have a strong scenic dimension: suspended spaces, figures and objects that seem to emerge from a deep memory, compositions that alternate sharpness and veiling to evoke time, absence, tracks. His production is characterized by an accurate construction of light and a refined use of superposition and symbolic stratification, through which the image takes on an almost pictorial quality.

The evocative value of this language has been highlighted by the critic and artist Renzo Margonari, who recognized a visionary dimension in Bormida's work. His photographs, writes Margonari, they are «exciting visions, alarming, indefinite like confused memories of dreams, whose consistency is confirmed by objective photographic firmness". Margonari also observes how the artist's images arise from the superposition of "transparent veils that fluctuate, filtering sensations", generating a single complex vision, in which memories are stratified, presences and allusions. From this process they emerge, according to the critic, “indirect emotions”: the resurfacing of dreams, deep fears and perceptions, returned through a photographic language that acts like a mental stage, where “actions or thoughts” take on visual consistency.

In Bormida's work, technical rigor and narrative sensitivity coexist, psychological investigation and attention to the theatrical dimension of the image. His photographs are places of transit, fragments of a realism filtered by imagination, spaces where reality is transformed into evocation. Memory - individual and collective - becomes the subject of a research that questions the relationship between what we see and what we remember, between presence and loss, between image and internal resonance.

His visual language combines technical precision and spiritual tension, making painting dialogue, scenography and photography in a sort of theater of the soul. During his career he has received numerous international awards.
